"Pirates, Vikings and Knights II currently features five gamemodes: Booty, Holy Grail, Territory, Last Team Standing and Team Deathmatch. Depending on the gamemode players need to complete various objectives to win the round. From simple killing and surviving, to stealing and capturing chests.
In order for a multiplayer game to be as extensive and fun as possible, game modes are created so that each map has it's own rules.
In the first official release of the mod only two game modes were available, but with time and dedication the development team improved them, as well adding new game modes to expand on the mod's potential.
As of Beta 3.1 there are six official game modes.

Booty
Booty
----
Chests are scattered throughout the map and each team has a base they must bring these chests to. The more chests you hold, the faster your counter goes down.  Each chest held is worth 1/6th of a point per second, so if you have 1 chest it takes 6 seconds to tick down a point. If you capture a chest that was owned by another team, 5 points are subtracted from your counter and added to theirs; the first team to 0 wins the round. Standing in an enemy's chest zone will stall their counter.

Picking up a Booty chest reduces your speed to a walk. If you have your special bar filled while holding the chest, you can perform a "Chest Special" which gives you a great speed boost. Handy for getting you out of nasty situations and back to the safety of your own base! Be sure not to get blocked by enemies, otherwise you'll just waste your special.
Booty Quest (BT) is a game mode based on Capture the Flag (CTF). Each team has the goal of stealing other team's treasure chests to earn points and reaching zero in their timer. One big difference between Booty Quest and a generic Capture the Flag map is the fact that the chest can only be gathered manually, while in CTF maps, like those in Team Fortress 2 and Quake, players can run over the flag to be captured.
Booty maps are easily recognized by the bt_ prefix. Official booty maps are: Island, Forgotten, Pingrove, and Townsquare.
Once captured the chest, the player is vulnerable to enemy attacks and, unlike in CTF maps, holding weapons is impossible since the player realistically carries the chest with his bare hands. However, the player can defend himself in various ways; if the special meter is full, the player can press the special attack button and his speed is boosted, giving him a substancial advantage. Players can also throw chests to the enemies as weapons, causing some parcial damage; it can be useful if the enemie's health is low. For a riskier approach, the player can drop the chest and attack the enemy. If the chest isn't carried by another player and it stays too long in an idle state it's brought back to the last chest area where it was placed. Chest carriers can also defend themselves by kicking the enemy.

There is only one single booty chest. The goal is to hold on to the chest until the timer reaches zero. Because you must hold the chest in your hands, you cannot defend yourself. Your team needs to defend you for the sake of winning the round. Unfortunately, matches usually end with one person hiding with the chest, until the timer runs out while all the other players just deathmatch.

Holy Grail
----
A Holy Grail is placed somewhere in the map. Teams must fight their way to the grail and grab it. The members of the team holding the grail must work together to kill a certain number of enemies. Both the grail holder and his surrounding teammates receive buffs from the grail including health regeneration. A grail icon above the holder's head is visible through walls, pointing enemies in the right direction. However, to keep things from getting too chaotic, the icon fades away at a certain distance and only updates its position every few seconds.

Holy Grail maps have the hg_ prefix, and Desertruin, Fort, Frostbite & Temple are Official maps supporting the gamemode.
Trinket Wars
Trinket Wars (TW) is a game mode with similarities to Deathmatch, where players need to kill a certain amount of players until their counter reaches zero. The only way to make a kill valid is if a player is carrying a team-specific trinket.
The trinket can be shared by any player of a respective team anytime; when someone is carrying the trinket  the player's health gets a boost -and it also regenerates when hit- and his health status changes into Enlightned. Players who are near the trinket's area also get a health boost and their kills inside the area are also valid. As opposed to the player who carries the trinket, the other players' health don't regenerate.
The players carrying the trinket or who are close to the carrier have a team-specific emblem glow that replaces the player model's shadow so that the game mode can recognize whoever made a valid kill. The three trinkets are specific to each class. The Knights have the Holy Grail, the Vikings have the Metal Horn and the Pirates have the Grog.
If the player who carries the trinket dies, other players of the same team need to get it back as quick as possible; if the trinket disappears or falls over a stage hazard, it's put on hold until a player of said team respawns and gets the trinket back.

Last Team Standing
Last Team Standing (LTS) functions exactly like arena mode. All players have to fight to survive and claim victorious, while the players that were killed stay dead until the end of the round. If the timer runs out, a Sudden Death mode starts, causing a chain of stage hazards and limiting the player's movements and chances of surviving. A round can end in a draw if the timer within the Sudden Death mode runs out or if the last surviving players of enemy teams die roughly at the same time.
Occasionally a round can start with Suddent Death Mode activated.

Trinket Wars
----
Trinket Wars is an overhaul of the long-plagued-by-balance-issues Holy Grail mode. Each team has their own 'Grail' or 'Trinket'. Each team has to protect their trinket carrier, whilst getting kills near him and try to take down enemy trinket carriers. With each team having its own Trinket and with players spawning close to friendly trinket carriers, expect big dirty fights all over the place. The team that utilizes teamwork and tactics the most efficiently wins.

Territory
Territory
----
Territories are strategically placed throughout the map. Teams need to capture these points and hold them. The more territories you own, the faster your counter drops. The first team to 0 will win the round. In some maps, holding all of the territories will allow the team to win in X number of seconds, no matter how high their counter is; these variables are all map-specific. Standing in an enemy's territory will reduce the rate of their counter, but the attackers must outnumber the defenders for the territory to change to neutral. To capture a territory, you must first clear out all enemies.

Maps with this gamemode have the te_ prefix, Sandstorm is currently the only Official map with this gamemode.
Territory (TE) is a game mode with a self-explanatory goal. While it doesn't work the same way as Team Fortress 2's Teritorial Control it works more like it's Control Points game mode, more precisely the 5CP variant, or the Territorial Control maps from other Source games like Day of Defeat: Source.
Depending the number of territories present in the map, the teams must capture the existing areas for their timer to run out, much like Booty Quest maps; if a team captures two areas, the timer runs out faster; if a team captures all existing areas in the map, the enemy teams have only thirty seconds to capture back one of the territories before the round is over. The only map which doesn't have that specific rule is Cara, which has only two capture areas, horses, whatever...

Last Team Standing
Official Maps
----

All teams spawn and each player has 1 life per round. Once killed, you become a spectator. The last team to have players alive will win the round. There is a timer to control the round, if the timer reaches 0:00, players enter Sudden Death. The exact effects of Sudden Death vary from map to map, but they usually force players into a small area in the middle of the map. Sudden Death will only last for so long before the round automatically ends. If there is no winner by this time, the round is considered a Draw. Sudden Death has a random chance of occurring very suddenly at round start.
*Sandstorm
*Cara
*Tortuga

LTS maps have the lts_ prefix, Official Last Team Standing maps are: Arena, Cathedral, Town, and Gravedanger.

Objective Push
Objective Push
----

Difficult to describe, very map specific. The mapper has a lot of control over how the game mode works. Generally there is a timer set at the beginning of the round. The mapper chooses who the timer runs for. The mapper also chooses objectives the players must attain before the timer runs out. These may include objects to destroy, buttons to press, any array of triggers at the mappers discretion. Time can be added to the timer through triggers and teams can be chosen for the timer. When the timer reaches zero the team designated by the mapper will win the round. See this threadfor more information!
Objective Push (OP) is a game mode programmed by CrackaPolly. It's a game mode with no specific goal where the mapper can create his own set of rules for his own map. Due to it's concept's nature there are no official maps that use the Objective Push prefix, however the mode's code is included in the mod's SDK, ready for people to create their own maps using said prefix.

Team Deathmatch
Team Deathmatch
----
Players spawn around the map and simply kill as many enemies as possible. There are no rounds and the only objective is to annihilate players on opposing teams.

Planned Gamemodes
Team Deathmatch (TD), like other multiplayer games with Deathmatch mode, is a free-for-all game where players have the simple task of killing enemy teams' players. While there are no official maps, Source SDK users can create custom maps using the game mode's prefix under the info_pvk entity.
Siege
----
Each team has a base they must protect. At the same time they're trying to siege the other teams' bases. One player will be able to play the lord class who can buy upgrades and siege weapons for their team with resources gathered by players from kills. Ultimate goals vary from map to map.

Slay the Dragon
Discontinued Game Modes
----
All three teams try to take down a giant A.I. controlled dragon. They won't work together, as they can kill each other at the same time.

Relic
Booty Tag
----
Relics are placed throughout the map. These are very powerful objects that can bring harm to an enemy base. By picking up a relic and bringing it to an enemy base, the team will score points. The first team to a set amount of points will win.

Assassination
Booty Tag was one of the two original game modes available in the mod, the other one being Booty. In it's essence is a prototyped version of Trinket Wars only instead of three trinkets players only have a treasure chest which respawns at a specific location in the map. Much like the trinkets, whoever carries the chest gives to it's team the advantage of killing the enemies with the counter slowly reaching zero. The game mode proved to be impractical because players could hide anywhere in the map and give infinite advantage to it's team. A year later it was reworked as Holy Grail.
----

They are out to kill your Lord! You must protect him at all costs by escorting him to a safe point in the map. Enemies try to assassinate the Lord.
Holy Grail
Holy Grail makes substantial improvements over Booty Tag. The chest is replaced by the Holy Grail, the grail carrier can now attack on his own and grail could be shared automatically by any member. A couple of years later the game mode was further improved to become Trinket Wars, so that it's gameplay becomes more balanced for all three teams.

Fan-made Game Modes
Capture the Flag
Capture the Flag
----

Capture the other teams banner and return it to your base. If your banner is missing, you cannot score until your banner has been retrieved."
A traditional Capture the Flag Mode was coded by programmer Spirrwell and it can be downloaded for the mod. The code can also be downloaded for Hammer and built maps under it. The game mode is in development and as of January 2015 only two teams can be used rather than three, mostly because Capture the Flag is primarly conceived for two teams only.

Planned Game Modes
Since Pirates, Vikings and Knights II is far from having a definitive version, more game modes are planned and currently being tested by the development team and beta testers. Such modes include a traditional Capture the Flag mode, a Siege mode where teams must defend their own bases, a Slay the Dragon mode with a self-explanatory goal, among other ideas.

Revision as of 19:54, 5 May 2015

In order for a multiplayer game to be as extensive and fun as possible, game modes are created so that each map has it's own rules. In the first official release of the mod only two game modes were available, but with time and dedication the development team improved them, as well adding new game modes to expand on the mod's potential. As of Beta 3.1 there are six official game modes.
